Quinn Kallisti and I buddied up in week one and began planning for our Post Production mission. We landed in the ‘noodle scene’ from the original Blade Runner movie as we’re both fans and it met the project criteria. We put together a production plan (previously submitted) and ventured out into various locations in Brisbane city with a zoom H6 to capture some sounds we needed such as:

· Location ambiences

· Dry and wet footsteps

· Rain

· Restaurant clutter

We began by recording the footsteps of people walking by in the mall at a few different points. I noticed immediately that we were picking up a lot of people’s conversations in the distance so had to adjust where we were aiming the microphones on a number of occasions in order to get a solid 3-5 minutes of usable recording. A few bonus recordings were the ones that picked up restaurant clutter (plates/ cutlery/ muffled voices) but also included footsteps as well.

After deciding we were happy with the ambient recordings we’d captured, Quinn and I sought after some water features around the city to try and emulate the sound of rain which you can hear in the entire clip from the movie. Quinn had an idea of some locations to try out such as water falls in Roma Street Parklands. But before we got there, we tried recording a water feature in the city which ended up not sounding the way we’d like it too because of its mass and the size of the droplets etc. We also recorded a shower in the bathrooms of where I work. This would end up being the core of the rain sound in the clip since it’s droplets emulated rain closely and they were falling on a hard surface.

One thing I forgot to mention before was the when we got to the city we opened up the H6 case and noticed that the wind sock was missing. This was a shame since we had a lot to record that day and yeah, it was windy. We came up with a solution however and that was to use my beanie to block out the wind. The beanie (obviously not designed for this) was a bit thicker than the wind sock would have been so perhaps we missed out on some frequencies that could have been there if we had of checked and tested the equipment before use.

Quinn and I divided up some of next week’s work to do at home to save time.
